What’s the Right Chevrolet Work Truck for a Lubbock Buyer?

Most work-truck advice opens with a trim name: get the WT, step up to the LT, splurge on the High Country. That answers a question the buyer hasn’t asked yet.

The job comes first. Work out what you tow and haul, and the engine, the trim and the fuel follow from it.

Keep reading below, then schedule a test drive in Lubbock. Bringing your own numbers to the lot settles this faster than any spec sheet.

Which Chevrolet work truck fits your Lubbock job?

Match the truck line to the heaviest thing you pull. Chevrolet rates the Colorado Crew Cab to tow 7,700 lbs with the 2.7L TurboMax and Trailering Package, and everything heavier starts a rung up.

Colorado: light trailers, tools, and a lower starting price at $32,400 for the WT.

Silverado 1500: the middle of the line, with a top tow rating of 13,300 lbs on one specific build.

Silverado 2500 HD: Chevrolet rates its maximum trailering weight at 22,420 lbs.

Silverado 3500 HD: the top of the heavy-duty line, rated at 36,000 lbs maximum trailering weight.

Silverado Cab Chassis: a bare frame for a bed you build, rated for up to 7,329 lbs of payload.

Silverado EV: the electric option, rated to tow up to 12,500 lbs on the Extended Range LT.

Every number above is Chevrolet’s own, and every price is a national starting MSRP. Those prices leave out destination freight, tax, title, license, and dealer fees.

How to measure the load before you pick a truck

Write down three numbers: your heaviest trailer, your heaviest bed load, and how many people ride along. Those three numbers choose the line before any trim name enters the talk.

Two terms do most of the work here.

Towing capacity: the weight of the trailer the truck can pull. Chevrolet publishes it for a named configuration, such as a cab style, engine, and tow package.

Payload: what the truck carries in the cab and the bed, passengers and gear included.

That naming matters. The 13,300-lb Silverado 1500 figure belongs to a Double Cab Standard Bed 2WD with the available Duramax 3.0L Turbo-Diesel, the Max Trailering Package, and 20-inch wheels. A truck with a different cab, engine, or package has a different number, so the figure on the exact truck is the one that counts.

Trucks are what Lubbock writes to us about. In our Google reviews, “new truck” comes up 244 times, ahead of wait time at 102. Plenty of people here still say Gene Messer Chevrolet, and in a July 2026 Google review, Adam L. wrote: “It was a great experience getting my truck serviced with Gene Messer Chevrolet. I was kept informed of activity as it progressed keeping me from wondering if work had started. I was really impressed with all service provided, looking forward to my next service date. Thank you!” It is the same store at 1302 South Loop 289, now part of Group 1 Automotive.

The Colorado covers trailers up to 7,700 lbs

If your heaviest trailer weighs 7,700 lbs or less, the Colorado is the first truck to price. Chevrolet rates the Crew Cab with the 2.7L TurboMax and Trailering Package to tow up to 7,700 lbs.

Every 2026 Colorado comes with that 2.7L TurboMax, rated at 310 hp. The WT starts at $32,400, and the ladder runs through Custom at $33,545, LT at $36,000, Trail Boss at $40,500, Z71 at $44,600, and ZR2 at $50,700.

The ZR2 is built for off-road work and carries a lower tow rating of 6,000 lbs. A buyer who tows near the top of the range should look at the Trailering Package build, not the trail trim.

Which Silverado 1500 trim fits once you know the load?

Choose the engine and tow package first, then the trim. Chevrolet’s top Silverado 1500 tow rating, 13,300 lbs, belongs to a Double Cab Standard Bed 2WD with the available Duramax Turbo-Diesel, the Max Trailering Package, and 20-inch wheels.

Silverado 1500 trim Starting MSRP Standard engine
WT $36,900 2.7L TurboMax, 310 hp
Custom $42,400 2.7L TurboMax, 310 hp
LT $47,900 2.7L TurboMax, 310 hp
RST $51,300 2.7L TurboMax, 310 hp
LTZ $58,000 5.3L EcoTec3 V8, 355 hp
High Country $62,900 5.3L EcoTec3 V8, 355 hp

The 6.2L V8 at 420 hp is available on the RST Crew Cab 4×4, LT Trail Boss, LTZ 4×4, ZR2, and High Country 4×4. Chevrolet lists the 305 hp Duramax diesel as available on the Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, LTZ, and High Country, and standard on the ZR2. If the diesel is the engine your load calls for, that list is where your trim search starts.

Once the load is settled, trims turn into a comfort and content choice. In a July 2026 Google review, Melinda P. wrote: “My salesman was Johnny Jimenez and he did an amazing time from the start until we drove off the lot with our new 2026 Chevrolet Silverado. He was so helpful, in every aspect of our buying experience. I was indecisive of what I really wanted, he showed me the Trail Boss, Z71’s and we finally decided on the Silverado RST, which we love. In addition he made sure we had On Star activated and familiarized us with options the vehicle has to offer.”

When do you need a Silverado 2500 HD or 3500 HD?

Step up to the heavy-duty line when your trailer weighs more than 13,300 lbs. Chevrolet rates the Silverado 2500 HD at 22,420 lbs maximum trailering weight and the 3500 HD at 36,000 lbs.

The HD line starts at $45,900 for the WT, then runs through Custom at $49,200, LT at $52,600, LTZ at $63,300, ZR2 at $73,200, and High Country at $73,600. The available Duramax 6.6L Turbo-Diesel V8 makes 470 hp.

Think about the heaviest day, not the average one. A loaded equipment trailer on a Tuesday sets the truck, even if Wednesday is an empty bed. Buying the 1500 for the average week and then borrowing a bigger truck for the heavy one costs more than starting in the HD line.

What is a Cab Chassis truck, and who needs one?

A Cab Chassis is a Silverado with the cab and frame and no pickup bed. You buy it to mount your own flatbed, service body, or other equipment. Chevrolet lists a maximum payload of up to 7,329 lbs across the line, and Chevrolet does not publish which configuration reaches it.

The standard engine is a 6.6L V8 gas engine at 401 hp, and the available Duramax 6.6L Turbo-Diesel V8 makes 470 hp. EPA rates the 2WD at 15 city, 18 highway, and 16 combined mpg, and the 4WD at 14, 16, and 15.

Pick this build when the bed itself is part of your job. If you haul loose cargo in a standard pickup bed, the Silverado 1500 or HD fits the work and costs less to set up.

Gas, diesel, or electric: choose the fuel after the weight

Pick the fuel after you know the load, because the load limits which engines are on the table. Gas is the standard answer, diesel adds torque for heavy trailers, and electric works when the truck returns to your own plug every night.

Power What Chevrolet publishes Where it fits
Gas 355 hp 5.3L V8 on the LTZ and High Country; 401 hp 6.6L V8 on the Cab Chassis Daily work, mixed loads, and the lowest starting prices
Diesel 305 hp Duramax on the 1500; 470 hp Duramax 6.6L on the HD and Cab Chassis Heavy trailers and long hauls
Electric Silverado EV Custom from $55,895; 493 miles of EPA range on the Max Range WT Short, predictable routes that end at your own charger

Range and towing trade against each other on the electric truck. The Extended Range LT is rated to tow 12,500 lbs, the Standard Range LT 8,500 lbs, and the Max Range LT 7,000 lbs. If your trailer is heavy, the long-range battery is the wrong pick.

Lubbock summers add a planning detail for any work truck. NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 normals show 13.3 days a year at or above 100 degrees (NOAA, 2020). Texas also charges electric trucks a $200 annual fee at registration renewal (Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, 2026).

What to settle on the exact truck before you sign

Settle five things on the exact vehicle in front of you, and get them in writing before you sign. Chevrolet’s starting MSRP leaves out destination freight, tax, title, license, and dealer fees, so the sticker price is only the start.

The configuration: confirm the cab, bed, engine, and tow package match the tow rating you planned around.

The price and terms: ask for the figures on that specific truck, with every fee on its own line.

Texas tax: motor vehicle sales tax is 6.25% of the sales price minus your trade-in allowance (Texas Comptroller, 2026).

Registration: the registration line is $51.75, and Lubbock County adds $10 in local fees (Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, 2026).

The documentary fee: Texas sets no hard dollar cap, and a dealer charging more than $225 must file a notification and cost analysis with the OCCC (Texas Office of Consumer Credit Commissioner, 2024). Ask what ours is before you sit down.

Your trade deserves the same attention. In July 2025, 28.2% of trade-ins carried negative equity, with buyers owing an average of $6,902 above the vehicle’s value (Edmunds, 2025). A trade value you see online before you visit, with pre-approval alongside it, keeps that number from surprising you at the desk.

In an August 2026 Google review, Jon C. wrote: “Were very easy to work with remotely on price, trade in and financing. Truck was ready to go for a test drive when I arrived and the process was as efficient as I could hope for.”

Frequently asked questions

How much can a Silverado 1500 tow?

Chevrolet’s top published rating is 13,300 lbs, on a Double Cab Standard Bed 2WD with the available Duramax Turbo-Diesel, Max Trailering Package, and 20-inch wheels. Other cab, engine, and package combinations carry lower numbers, so check the rating on the exact truck.

Is the Silverado 1500 WT a real work truck?

Yes. It is the entry price in the Silverado 1500 line at $36,900, and the 2.7L TurboMax with 310 hp comes standard. Whether it fits your job depends on the trailer weight you worked out first.

Should I buy a regular, double, or crew cab?

Chevrolet names the cab alongside each tow rating, such as the Colorado Crew Cab, the Silverado 1500 Double Cab, and the Silverado EV Crew Cab. Pick the cab for the number of people who ride, then confirm the tow rating for that cab on the exact truck.

Do I need an emissions test on a work truck in Lubbock?

Lubbock County is not one of the 17 Texas counties that require an emissions inspection for non-commercial vehicles (Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, 2026). Texas also dropped the annual safety inspection for non-commercial vehicles on January 1, 2025.

How much does the Silverado EV cost?

Chevrolet lists the Silverado EV Custom from $55,895, the LT from $69,100, and the Trail Boss from $70,000. As with every price here, those are national starting MSRPs that leave out freight, tax, title, license, and dealer fees.

Do you sell used and certified work trucks too?

We sell new, used, and certified pre-owned Chevrolet vehicles in one Lubbock store. You can browse the inventory online before you visit.

Can I start the paperwork before I come in?

Yes. You can value your trade and get pre-approved online, then finish in store at 1302 South Loop 289.

Start with the weight and the trim picks itself

Work out the heaviest trailer and the heaviest bed load, and the Chevrolet work truck for your job is nearly always one line on the list. The trim comes last, and then it’s mostly about which seats and features you want to live with.

Getting the load right is half the job. The other half is the exact truck, with its price and terms written down before you sign.

How Group 1 Chevrolet Hub City settles price, trade, and pre-approval online

Choosing a truck by load only works if the exact truck, price, and terms are settled before you sign. We run that part online: you value your trade, get a fast pre-approval, and see pricing and terms on a specific vehicle, then finish in store.

Purchased a used vehicle from this dealership. Sales representative Daniel was very helpful with the sales process and even stayed late to accommodate the sale for us. Vehicle had a minor issue that was discovered but the service team was able to facilitate the repair without issue and at no cost. I am very thankful to the service manager John, service rep Thomas and the service techs for taking care of my vehicle and keeping me on the road.”
